Episode 148 - The Coed and the Zombie Stoner and Asteroid vs Earth

We are up to week 3 of our Asylum month and this week we have a very mis-matched combo of films to discuss.

First, have you ever wondered what would happen if a zombie was really stoned pretty much all the time? Well, good news, there is a movie that will answer your question and we will be covering it in this week's episode. It's The Coed and the Zombie Stoner!

Then, it turns out there's yet another asteroid on a collision course with Earth. We can't deflect the asteroid so instead we decide we will just move the Earth instead. Seems impossible, you say? What if I told you that Tia Carrere and Tim Russ were on a hand to help out? Surely the science of Asteroid vs Earth can't be bad if they have Tuvok (spoiler alert: turns out the science can indeed be bad. Really bad).

It may be an unusual combination of films, but it leads to a lot of interesting discussions so be sure to check out this week's show!

Episode 147 - Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty

Are you feeling sleepy? Let's hope so because there's a whole lot of slumber in this week's films. We are continuing our Asylum month; this week Gabbie picked Maleficent and the assocaited Asylum mockbuster, Sleeping Beauty. Unlike most Sleeping Beauty adaptations, this one features ghouls, dragons, sea serpents and manual decapitation! Sounds like a good time to me!

Episode 146 - Pacific Rim and Atlantic Rim

This week we kick off a month-long exploration of The Asylum. Arguably The Asylum is most known for its mockbusters (or tie-ins, as they like to call them) and its certainly the format that has launched them as a company so we start things off with a comparison of one of their tie-ins, along with the movie it is tying in to. If you have read the title, you have probably already guessed that means its going to be Pacific Rim squaring off against Atlantic Rim

How do these two films compare? Can a movie with a budget of $500,000 possibly hope to compete with a movie with a budget of $190,000,000? Which movie will have the more coherent plot? And will either or both films be worth your time? For the answer to these and many other questions, tune into this week's episode!

Aloha! This week's it's island horror time so grab your swimsuit, your sunscreen and your murder!

First, we visit scenic Ireland for Dorothy Mills. A psychologist investigates the actions of a mysterious girl who may have multiple personalities. Soon strange things start happening on the island which may have its own mysterious past!

Then, we are off to Pleasure Island, a resort run by washed up singer Coconut Pete (played by Bill Paxton). All would be great if the movie's title wasn't Club Dread. When staff members start turning up dead, it's up to the remaining staff to find the killer before its too late! Plus, this movie has human Pacman!

Episode 144 - Student Bodies and Once Bitten

This week we are all about the early to mid-80s horror comedies. First up, it's Student Bodies, an early example of a slasher movie spoof. Students at Labam High keep dropping dead. Will Toby be able to track down the mysterious Breather before all her friends are dead? Or is she doomed from the start? Or maybe she's the killer? Who knows?

Then we discuss Once Bitten. Mark (played by Jim Carrey in his very first starring role) is a ordinary high school student but he has been having intimacy issues with his girlfriend, Robin. When a vampire (known only as the Countess) sets her sights on Mark, Robin will have to defend her man through the ancient art of a dance-off. Oh, and there's some vampires biting people and such.

All this plus a whole lots of tangents this week on our show!

Episode 143 - It's Alive and Wicked LIttle Things

This week, we talk a look at the darker side of children. Oh, sure, they may be cute and vital to the continuation of our species, but what happens when they turn out a touch homicidal?

First up, it's 1974's It's Alive. Frank and Lenore are expecting a baby. But unfortunately for them, this baby has more than a few mutations and a tendency to kill when frightened. And it is a very easily frightened baby.

Then we talk about 2006's Wicked Little Things. When the Tunney family move in to the old family home, they soon learn that it is near an old mine. Said mine collapsed almost a hundred years ago killing its many child laborers. Now the old labor the dead children have on their minds is the labor of murder!

All that, and a bonus film on this week's episode of Failing Grade!

Episode 142 - Reaper and Edge of Tomorrow

Don't you just hate it when one day you are going about your life and then you find out that your parents sold your soul to the devil before you were even conceived? That's the fate that befalls Sam Oliver in Reaper. But it's not all bad news; instead of toiling away in the pits of hell, he gets to be a bounty hunter collecting escaped souls. Plus he gets to hang out with Ray Wise (who plays Satan). Trevor and Gabbie fill you in on this show that you probably missed.

Then it's another edition of Failing Grade at the Movies as Trevor talks all about Edge of Tomorrow and why you should go see it while you still can.

Episode 141 - Kids Get Dead 2 and Hell Night

We have quite a fun double-bill on tap for you this week. First up, we talk about the sequel to 80s slasher homage, Kids Get Dead. That's right, Kids Get Dead 2: The Kids Get Deader. This time around, Casey is determined to get to the bottom of how the events from the first movie were foretold in a book so she tracks down the author. While she is doing that, Brian is reading the follow-up book, Kids Get Dead 2, while his sister is having a party at his house. Hopefully nobody is going to end up dead. Or deader!

It seemed obvious to pair Kids Get Dead 2 with an 80s slasher movie so that's what we did when we took a look at Hell Night. Linda Blair is Marti and she and 3 fellow pledges are going to have to spend the night in Garth Manor if they want to get in to their respective fraternity/sorority. Legend has it that 12 years ago, most of the freakish and isolated inhabitants of Garth Manor were brutally by the family patriarch. However said legend also claims that one of the children survived and was never seen again. Surely that's just a silly legend though, right? Right?

So why not check out this week's episode?

Episode 140 - The Machine and Cyborg

It's all about the AI this week. First up, we talk about The Machine. When can a being be considered alive? Do we want artificial lifeforms? And, most important of all (to some), how can this benefit the military? These questions and more are answered in The Machine.

Then we have another Jean-Claude Van Damme film, Cyborg. It's the not too distant future and a plague has wiped out most of humanity. The good news is that there's a cyborg with a potential key for a cure. The bad news is that said cyborg is in the hands of Fender; a not very nice man that Jean-Claude Van Damme doesn't much care for. Much violence ensues!

Episode 139 - Death Train and Sudden Death

It's an all death, all the time episode of Failing Grade this week. First up, did you know there was a movie in the early 90s that starred Pierce Brosnan, Patrick Stewart AND Christopher Lee. Well, there was and it is called Death Train. Christopher Lee is an evil Russian general and its up to Pierce Brosnan and Patrick Stewart to stop him before he manages to reignite the cold war!

Then, it's hockey time with Sudden Death. Jean-Claude Van Damme is fire marshal that just happens to be working Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals when, wouldn't you know, someone decides to take the Vice President hostage and threaten to blow up the whole stadium. Oh, and said someone also ends up in possession of Van Damme's daughter. You better believe it's cheesy action time!
